Dennis O’Neil reads Fanzines and The Rock ‘n Roll Press
According to Dennis O’Neil, rock and roll music—unlike other forms of popular entertainment—is an inherently tripolar phenomenon. Since its inception, it has existed as a three-sided movement that depends on record labels, the musicians themselves, while actively relying on the input of its audience—it is “an art form coming from us.” The corporate Rock and Roll Press, which includes magazines like Rolling Stone, Spin and Rip, covers only a small percentage of rock and roll bands and is mainly concerned with making a profit! Based on the punk rock DIY ethos and emphasis on independent thought, fanzines allow the everyday music listener to write about music he or she wants to cover. They also help bring the music of bands that would otherwise remain obscure to the mainstream to audiences across America! Featuring interviews with fanzine authors: Steve Blush, author of “Seconds”, Jim Testa, author of “Jersey Beat” and Jack Rabbit, author of “The Big Takeover.” The show also features multiple, amazing studio performances by Chronic Citizens and Steppin’ Razor!
O’Neil is a rock columnist for “Forward Motion,” a socialist bi-monthly.1987 TRT: 28 minutes #123
