  • Nancy Peckenham Reads The U.S. Press on Nicaragua: The Credibility of Cratologists

Nancy Peckenham, former CNN executive producer, documentary producer and writer, author of “Honduras, portrait of a captive nation” shows how extremely biased the American press was during the 1984 Nicaraguan general election. U.S. Newspapers and the Reagan administration often gave contradictory and inaccurate information regarding the US backed opposition’s freedom to run in the election and generally dismissed the Sandinista government’s democratic values. Footage from Nicaragua’s state TV shows otherwise, as each of the opposition parties had it’s electoral campaign broadcast on Sandinista Television. The Sandinista National Liberation Front won the election by a large margin; Reagan’s administration never recognized the election’s legitimacy, even though it was deemed validby numerous impartial foreign observers.
