  • Neil Smith Reads USA Today: The Flip Side of the Weather is the News

Neil Smith is a Professor of Anthropology and Geography and the Director of the Center for Place, Culture and Politics at the Graduate Center department of the City University of New York. Neil reads USA Today, America’s only national newspaper and the one with the largest circulation. The newspaper’s agenda of fostering national unity and consciousness through the dissemination of endless and useless trivia is analysed. Finding the lowest common cultural denominator erases all tensions within American society and forwards the idea that the only difference between Americans are geographical anecdotes and the local non-happenings that fill up the newspaper’s pages.
