Rereading “The Year of the Dragon”: Under Fire
Paper Tiger members Renee Tajima, Amy Chen and Emily Woo Yamasaki take a look at the pervasive racism and misogyny depicted in Michael Cimino’s 1985 sensationalist thriller Year of the Dragon. Through a rereading and reenactment of Cimino’s script, Tajima, Chen and Yamasaki expose the dangerous and immobilizing fictions the films presents about Chinatown. As this collective points out, the troubling depictions put forth in Year of the Dragon broach a range of important topics from Hollywood’s misrepresentation of minority communities and reliance on ethnic stereotypes to the routine abuse and subjugation of women in mainstream film. Tajima’s live presentation is paired with footage of community protests calling for the nationwide boycott of the Year of the Dragon. This PTTV production is accented with the usual hand-held signs, interesting camera angles and frank dialogue that perfectly characterizes the early years of Paper Tiger.
