Steve Schewel Introduces The North Carolina Independent: Progressive Newspaper Flourishes in the South
In this program, shot on location at the editorial offices of the North Carolina Independent, Steve Schewel, the publisher and co-founder of the bi-weekly paper gives a page by page read through, discussing the ins and outs of the newspaper business. The North Carolina Independent covers the people, politics and economics of the state and has now become the Independent Weekly. Schewel explains the format, content, obstacles and opportunities of the small progressive newspaper and its place within the mediascape of the conservative South. He also discusses the ways in which the paper tries to cover people, stories, and issues, such as articles on abortion, corruption, and “low-brow” culture, which more mainstream publications neglect and omit. Schewel and a journalist at the paper discuss how a bi-weekly magazine gives writers the opportunity to do more thorough journalistic research and write more in-depth, analytical pieces than at the typical daily newspaper. Schewel finally discusses the economic difficulties of gaining readership and soliciting advertisers which one inevitably encounters when running an independent publication. This program offers the viewer a chance to look inside the information industry through the eyes of a genuine progressive media outlet attempting to break into the market.
