Tetsuo Kogawa Cooks Up an FM Transmitter
In this “cooking show,” Prof. Tetsuo Kogawa gives us step-by-step instructions on how to create our very own transmitter radios out of transistor radios. Kogawa argues that the present media is too large, therefore smaller media must be created in order to diversify the airwaves. The solution: don’t just listen, transmit! The FM bandis a forum to which all people should have access Featuring interviews with other pirate radio founders, including Mbanna Kantanko, who broadcasts Zoom Black Magic Radio out of his Springfield, Illinois living room, this show underlines the simple, affordable and environmentally friendly measures we can take to build our own “mini media” of pirate radio stations using community airwaves. This show is a valuable tool for those interested in reclaiming our airwaves, particularly in light of the increasing corporate stronghold on media and cutthroat FCC licensing laws. Tetsuo Kogawa is currently Professor of Communication Studies at Tokyo Keizai University’s Department of Communications. Not only is Kogawa responsible for introducing free radio in Japan, he has also authored more than 30 books on urban space, micro politics, film and media culture. Kogawa’s collaborative “cooking show” with Paper Tiger Television has proven widely influential as a work of radio performance art, and has served as a model for radio building workshops worldwide.
