Made by the Miners Campaign Tape Project during the 1980’s British Miners strike to represent the miners’ side of the controversy. The first part of the show, The Lie Machine: Media and the Miners Strike, focuses on the British media’s portrayal of the miners’ strike and the battle between supporting workers rights and fueling the capitalist economy. The mainstream media, under the strict supervision of Margaret Thatcher and the British government, demoralized and antagonized the strikers and union leaders. This tape serves as a tool for strikers explain the real reasons for the strike and to represent the issues from the union’s point of view, unmanipulated or degraded by higher powers. The second part, Straight Speaking, The Facts About The Miners Strike, exposes the lies told by Ian MacGregor of the National Coal Board in 1983 and ’84 press statements about the miners strike, which were perpetuated and reinforced by the media. This false information demoralized the union and miners and led them to believe that the strike was collapsing. Both parts include footage of rallies and conventions, speeches made by Unions organizers Arthur Scargill and Jack Taylor, and interviews with miners’ and their families. Produced during the 1985 British Miners’ strikes by N.U.M. and several British media collectives.
