Torn Between Colors: Youth and the Media
Produced with the Through Our Eyes Video History Project, Black and Latino high school students of the Schomburg Satellite Academy in the South Bronx look at the media portrayal of defendants in the Yusef Hawkins Bensonhurst murder and Central Park rape cases. What role does the use of language and image have in constructing public opinion around racially charged cases, and more importantly, how do these representations mirror a racist system which continually denies minorities access to equal justice? A dynamic demonstration of how youth are using media production to take control of their own images.
